In Your 20’s:

Signs of aging usually begin to creep up during our late twenties, but there are healthy ways to prevent them. This is usually a time where we don’t have to worry too much about our diet and skincare regimen, but it’s important to start early. Here are some tips for when you’re in your 20’s:

Tip 1, ALWAYS Wear Sunscreen.

No matter your skin type, sunscreen is essential. Sunscreen helps to prevent sunburn and premature aging such as but not limited to, wrinkles and leathery skin. Sunscreen also decreases the risk of skin cancer.

Tip 2, Get Your Beauty Sleep.

Sleep is essential to prevent dark circles and under eye puffiness. Six hours of sleep or less leads your body to produce more street hormone cortisol, which leads to collagen breakdown. During sleep, your skin rejuvenates to build up lost resources from the day. If you’re not getting your full 8 hours (because life happens), try putting your eye cream, eye gel or serum in the refrigerator to reduce puffiness.

Tip 3, Add Vitamin C To Your Regimen.

While we typically apply Vitamin C externally to the face, it’s also important to take it internally too. Vitamin C is found at the epidermis and dermis and helps keep skin healthy by producing collagen. When ingested, Vitamin C helps to strengthen your body’s immune system and protects the skin from free radicals.

Tip 4, Stay Hydrated.

Water is important for our overall health. It helps with circulation, digestion and absorption. Our skin cells and body cells are made up of water and without it we would not be able to function. The more water we drink, the more moisture our skin retains, leading to fewer wrinkles.

Tip 5, Cleanse And Moisturize.

We’ve all been there while we’re so tired we just fall asleep in our makeup. Removing your makeup before bed and properly cleansing your face helps to rid the face of dirt that can clog your pores and keep oil trapped in the skin which leads to bacteria and breakouts. Who wants a breakout?! Adding a daily cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer will keep your skin healthy and glowing.

In Your 30s & 40’s:

Tip 1, Exfoliate.

At this age, our skin cell turnover rate starts to slow down and dead skin cells begin to accumulate on the surface. When cell turnover decreases, we see less of a glow to our skin. Get rid of dead skin cells by exfoliating 1-3 times per week (based on how much your skin can tolerate). Exfoliating also helps your skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Tip 2, Add a Night Cream.

As we mentioned earlier, getting 8 hours of sleep is key for skin rejuvenation. Adding a night cream with powerful ingredients is just another way to give your skin a healthy boost.

Tip 3, Use Products With Hyaluronic Acid.

Hyaluronic Acid (also referred to as HA) is a glycosaminoglycan that occurs naturally in the skin. It is a humectant, that helps skin to maintain water. HA is known to improve skin’s hydration and help plump up the skin, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Tip 4, Use a Retinol Product.

Retinol is a Vitamin A compound that aids in collagen production and cell turnover to even out wrinkles. Start off with a low dose to see how your skin reacts, and most importantly, ALWAYS use a sunscreen in conjunction as retinoids increase your photosensitivity.

In Your 50’s & Beyond:

Tip 1, Use Eye Cream.

Choose eye creams that have collagen boosters such as peptides or glycolic acid. This will help to add additional hydration making the under eye area appear more plump.

Tip 2, Treat Hormonal Acne.

If you’re beginning to see acne return or are experiencing a flare up when you would normally experience your cycle, this could be due to menopause. Cutting out diary and sugar can help, but we recommended speaking with your doctor to determine that plan that works best for you.

Tip 3, Use A Hydrating Sunscreen.

Skin becomes thinner and drier at this age due to loss of hydration. The emollients and humectant properties in a hydrating sunscreen with help to boost hydration and protect your skin.
